Crabgrass
If you want to minimize the prospect of having crabgrass, keep your grass thick by overseeding and aerate regularly to avoid compacted soil. The bottom line is that crabgrass has a hard time establishing itself in healthy lawns.
Take the fight one step further and apply a pre-emergent to the lawn when the soil temperature is between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. We stock a crabgrass preventer with and without fertilizer. Now is the time to apply crabgrass preventer before it gets much warmer.

The two best-selling fertilizers that Bill’s Service Center stocks are 12-12-12, an all-purpose fertilizer for lawns and gardens, and 6-24-24, a low nitrogen lawn starter/winterizer.
12-12-12 is a well-balanced fertilizer that our customers use on their lawns and in their gardens all spring, summer and fall. With equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash (potassium), 12-12-12 will get the grass growing, promote root growth and help your lawn get that healthy green color you love.
6-24-24 is primarily used as a starter fertilizer when seeding or overseeding, or as a winterizer to promote root growth before frost and really give the lawn a shot of color before winter kicks in. (For an early spring green, apply 6-24-24 to the lawn before starting your regular applications of 12-12-12.)
The three numbers in a fertilizer’s formula refer to the nitrogen, phosphorus and potash (potassium) content. Nitrogen promotes growth, while phosphorus and potash promote development, the root system, color and strength.
